Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in New Mexico is an amazing site where the forces of wind and water have converged to erode layers of volcanic rock, creating spectacular formations and canyons. The black caprocks, formed from a hard, resistant substance which erodes less easily, balance at the top of the softer, pumice cones, protecting them from melting completely away.

As a painter, I’m primarily interested in capturing the effect of light in the landscape, using vivid color, and creating the illusion of depth. The light at the end of the day, the contrast of colors—reds in the cliffs against the grey-greens of desert vegetation, the purple of shadow against the pink of rock,  along with the majesty of these two conjoined towers tapering into the clear azure sky, seemingly guarding the entrance to the trail, inspired my desire to capture something of that wonder.  A sketch made on site and a few photos enabled me to work in my studio to the recreate the scene in oil, my predominant medium.

Framed in narrow wood frame.
