Childhood summers in New Hampshire began my love for mountains, and for the past 10 years I have visited the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina almost every summer or fall, painting them as they transform throughout the day, in changing weather, and in different seasons. I particularly love the way the Blue Ridge mountains recede seemingly into infinity, each layer a paler blue than the last. The skies change fairly fast, often with mist rising in the mornings, or various cloud formations drifting or sweeping through. This endless process of transformation is a painter’s dream—the scene can be painted as many times as desired, with each painting showing a new aspect of the familiar landscape. Showing light and depth is my primary emphasis for all my painting, along with vibrant color, so I was excited to awaken early and work fast to capture this scene before it disappeared.
